A true American original foisted upon the Chinese by an increasingly antagonistic relationship between teacher and bureaucracy, Michael O’Neal’s musings, emails, and journal entries paint the portrait of a soul in search of life—and finding it around every corner. With his mortgage paid off, his children grown, and no romantic entanglements to speak of, O’Neal decides to fulfill a dream to spend a year abroad. He’d been dreaming of teaching overseas since he began taking his American students on tours around the world. And now, with nothing to lose and nothing to hold him down, he takes the opportunity of a lifetime teaching in Beijing, China. He quickly makes new friends, experiences the insanity of driving and eating, and waits in many lines for many hours to do not so many things. He takes rides on his bike that end in bloodshed (his own), enjoys drinking binges (his own), and experiences near-death accidents (again, his own).

I'm going to call him Mike. After reading this I feel like we're old friends. Basically he spent a year teaching English in Beijing, China. He was sick of the bureaucracy at his old job and headed to China in 2009. This book is a compilation of the email updates he sent his family and friends. This book is over 700 pages. Evidently he sent a lot of e-mails.
The e-mails reflect daily life in China's capital city. Some of the e-mails are hilarious, but they are insufficiently edited so there is a great deal of filler, fluff or mundane details. For example, there are too many updates on how much time he spent at the gym and how much beer he drank.
It's still a great book. Mike's irreverent humour reminded me of Tucker Max's "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell" although this was far less depraved than the other.
Having been to China, his observations about the pace and nature of life their as a tourist/traveller/resident are insightful and make me want to go back to the crowded and busy hutongs.

Being in Beijing Buses Bikes and Beer eBook Michael O'Neal Reviews
My family has traveled with Mike to several foreign lands. Mike helped us learn more than any classroom has ever offered. After reading this collection of adventures, and knowing how much Mike adds to the mix, we can't wait to go to both China and Beijing! Mike's down-to-earth approach to daily life and his incredible insight of the common denominators in human nature and cultures make these very digestible & entertaining history/culture lessons. Mike also has a collection of pictures from some of his Beijing exposures on Picasaweb. Many honor the Chinese proverb of expressing "10,000 words". Mike's imagination and his artful descriptions are outstanding, but maybe he can incorporate some of this collection for readers to enjoy some added variety in detail & color. Highly recommended!
Thanks to Mike O'Neal I feel like I have a bit of insight into what China is like. I very much enjoyed learning about the world outside of the tourist aspect of a country and many times felt like I was right there with him. His sense of humour and insight was very enjoyable and made me much more open minded to visiting all of China. The only thing that would have been better is if he had included pictures of what he had seen - right now I only have my imagination to draw from. I look forward to hearing about new adventures and hope he decides to chronicle them as well! Loved this one!
When Michael's book came to print, I am the first Chinese to order his book here from Beijing. I can't wait my excitement of opening the book to read Michael's description of Beijing, my campus, students and even me. Many times I couldn't hold my laughter. And I have to say his description about "me" is accurate. It is refreshing and interesting to see the life of Beijing from the prospective of a foreigner on a day-to-day basis. What made me deeply moved about his book is that Michael, a foreigner, not came here just to observe and arrive at his judgments in a condescending way with a sense of superiority. On the contrary, bearing a heart of tolerance and appreciation, he devoted himself to the down-to-earth life here, which made his book worthwhile to read for people who are really want to know about the true China.
To be honest, I never had an interest in China, until I read Mike's book. The account of his adventures in Beijing, told with great humor and just the right sarcasm were more than enough to give me a hope that the cost of plane tickets would take a sudden dive. His descriptions of the people and new experiences he encountered are told with the appreciated frankness and self awareness that make him easy to relate to, and make his stories though some unfortunate, even funnier. He has the kind of experiences you shouldn't laugh at, but can't help it, some that are touching, awe inspiring, and even some a little unsettling. Definitely worth a read, his book is for anyone interested in travel, exotic places, new customs, or just strange food. I really enjoyed it and hope he continues to write about his travels.
I have taught with Mike, I have traveled with Mike, and I have enjoyed a friendship with Mike for quite a few years. Never have I had a dull moment during that time of friendship. Mike's book, and experiences in China are the same. You see, Mike has a wonderful talent for meeting people, understanding them and their situation, and gaining friendships no matter where he has traveled. Then telling a story, that will have you on the edge of your seat, wondering how that story will twist! Being in Beijing, is a book of short stories. Events and people really, during his one year stay in China. From small living spaces, to language problems, to "Big Red" the bicycle, to physical problems, and people on the bus. Mike's way with words will have you laughing, and crying. The China that Mike met was different than I expected. Yet filled with the same situations that all travelers on this globe, called Earth, must endure. It was enjoyable, as an artist, to read about the experiences his words painted. The good, the bad, the mundane, I enjoyed, through Mike's book, a wonderful trip of the mind.
